SINGAPORE – Twelve young people, aged between 15 and 20, will be charged over their suspected involvement in fraudulently registering SIM cards.
They were offered cash rewards of between $10 and $15 per registered postpaid SIM card by a criminal syndicate, the police said in a statement on Aug 4.
Each person allegedly handed over between 17 and 42 SIM cards, registered under their names, to the syndicate.
The youth were allegedly instructed to sign up for and purchase SIM cards in bulk across different retailers, before being instructed to hand them over.
Criminal syndicates exploit local SIM cards and eSIMs as a channel of communication for scams, unlicensed moneylending and vice, among other illicit activities, said the police.
The youth – 11 males and one female – will be charged in court on Aug 5 and Aug 6.
If found guilty, they may be fined up to $10,000 and jailed for up to three years.
Members of the public who know of anyone who may be possibly involved in such criminal activities may submit a report to the police on 1800-255-0000 or online at
